The non-proteinogenic amino acid ornithine is an important support in detoxifying the body and also contributes significantly to the release of the growth hormone somatotropin. When it comes to detoxification, ornithine has the task in the urea cycle to convert nitrogenous compounds so that they are excreted as urea via the kidney.
In conjunction with the proteinogenic amino acid arginine, ornithine is also responsible for the ammonia breakdown, an end product of protein metabolism that has a performance-reducing effect. Together with arginine, ornithine is also necessary for the release of the growth hormone somatotropin, which ensures normal length growth during puberty.
